Martin Stanley is the author of the website Understanding the Civil Service, the book How to be a Civil Servant and several other publications aimed at demystifying government and explaining how Whitehall really works. He takes a particular interest in Civil Service Reform.
Martin was previously a senior civil servant in what is now the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). He was also the Chief Executive of the Better Regulation Executive and the Competition Commission (now the Competition and Markets Authority).
"All recent administrations have expressed concern about the role or performance of the civil service and there have been numerous recent policy disasters. This suggests that there may be fundamental problems with the way in which Parliament, ministers and the civil service work together.
I hope that this new Reform research programme will identify what is wrong with how modern government works and identify practical solutions."
