We engage with and communicate our thinking and research with opinion-formers and decision-makers from across the political spectrum. We engage purposefully seek out to engage with people who have different views to those expressed in our reports during the research process to ensure that we break the echo-chamber in which many think tanks can find themselves in.

A degree of uncertainty: an investigation into grade inflation in universities

With one-third of 18-year-olds now entering Higher Education (HE) each year, the ‘degree classification’ (i.e. final grade) awarded to students is arguably more important now than it has ever been. These classifications allow other individuals and organisations to differentiate between graduates in terms of what they have achieved by the end of their degree course. Any sign that the value of degree classifications has diminished over time would therefore be of great concern.

Reform submission: Public Accounts Committee’s inquiry on “Sustainability and Transformation in the NHS”

NHS England is right to have ambitious plans for reform. The nature of patient care is changing because of new challenges, such as an ageing population and the rise of long-term health conditions. Care is also changing because of new opportunities for the NHS, such as innovative technologies. However, to deliver a true transformation of services, the NHS should ensure that funding incentives are to be delivered in the most efficient ways.

Reform submission: Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee inquiry on “Sourcing public services: lessons learned from the collapse of Carillion”

The public sector spends around £242 billion a year on independent providers. The extent of this spend is often not recognised and it is crucial that public services achieve value for money from outsourcing.

The principle of competitive markets is sound: opening services to competition is a powerful lever to reduce cost and increase innovation. How government executes this is rightly under scrutiny.

Reform submission: Health Select Committee inquiry on “Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships”

NHS England has ambitious plans to reform healthcare. It wants to deliver more care in the community, in a timelier and more effective manner for patients. Key vehicles for achieving this are Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs), which are designed to bring together healthcare commissioners to coordinate local care plans.
