Mental health after the pandemic

Over the last 18 months, the Government has quite rightly prioritised protecting the nation from COVID-19. Yet the dislocation caused by the pandemic has left a growing toll of mental ill-health.

As we recover from the pandemic we will need, as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care put it, a “relentless focus on mental health”. Our health and care system will be central to meeting this challenge. Better harnessing technology and data, rolling out innovative care delivery models, and supporting our mental health workforce will all be key priorities.

Yet tackling mental ill-health requires a bold effort across Government and society. Raising societal awareness, working with employers to improve support at work, and tackling the drivers of mental ill-health in our communities are also essential.

Reform was delighted to host a panel discussion event on how the growing toll of mental ill-health can be addressed in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Panellists at this event included:

  • Gillian Keegan MP, Minister for Care and Mental Health
  • Rob Webster, Chief Executive, West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership
  • Paul Farmer, Chief Executive, Mind
