Exiting the European Union is both this parliament’s greatest challenge and its greatest opportunity. As Hilary Benn MP has highlighted, how Brexit impacts the UK economy is shaped by the negotiations, which are set to reach their apex at October’s EU summit. He has argued that the Government must seek to unite British voters; minimise uncertainty; protect the values that the UK shares with the EU, and develop a future relationship with the EU that strengthens Britain’s position globally. If these objectives are not met, public services and UK citizens will suffer. The need for high-level discussion as the Brexit process reaches a critical milestone could hardly be greater, especially as the Government seeks to promote the Chequers proposals.
We were delighted that Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Chair of the Select Committee for Exiting the European Union, led this event. The event brought together senior Parliamentarians, senior business leaders and other experts. It was conducted under the Chatham House Rule.
This event took place at the Labour Party conferences in Liverpool.
