With waiting lists for treatment now exceeding 6.5 million, and lengthy delays to ambulance attendances and A&E admissions regularly making headlines, the NHS faces a period of sustained crisis.
However, waitlists were in the millions pre-pandemic, and an increasingly unhealthy and ageing population means that demand will continue to rise. In addition, health inequalities remain of deep concern - both in terms of health outcomes and access to healthcare. A longer-term solution is needed to put the health and care system on a sustainable footing.
Reform is delighted to welcome Wes Streeting MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to lay out his thinking on how to reform and support the NHS post-pandemic, both in terms of the short-term response to the current crisis, and long-term measures to secure its future.
