How to win a General Election: what do voters really care about?

Reform was delighted to host this high-level panel event which will brought together academics, public, private and third sector leaders and the media. The panel event explored what voters want in terms of the domestic agenda, and how the parties are pitching themselves to attract votes.

Our exciting panel included:

  • Professor Sir John Curtice, Professor of Politics, University of Strathclyde
  • Ben Page, Chief Executive, Ipsos MORI
  • Pippa Crerar, Political Editor, Daily Mirror
  • Madeline Grant, Assistant Comment Editor, The Daily Telegraph

Polling shows that while voters see Brexit overwhelmingly as the most important issue facing the country, there is deep concern about the future of public services, with voters prioritising health and crime in particular. Recent polling undertaken by Deloitte and Reform reveals that the social care and housing crises are also cutting through, with people increasingly seeing these as priority areas for public spending.

The same polling also shows a significant degree of pessimism about the future of public services, and a desire to see services extended even if that means paying more tax. A notably stark finding is that half of people believe that young people’s futures will be worse than their parents’. Voters will want to see the Parties’ vision for delivering a fairer society and closing the opportunity gap.
