Global Leadership in Health Innovation: the role of data

Reform was delighted to welcome Sarah Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer, NHS Digital who led a roundtable event discussing ‘Global Leadership in Health Innovation: the role of data.’

As digital and technology become more widely implemented in healthcare, the opportunities for further innovation and efficiency widen. To maximise these opportunities, the use of data is key both in the delivery of care and development within the industry. The NHS’s unique collection and control of data from its service users can enable it to break down silos, achieve greater transparency in performance, improve service users’ experience, identify patients most in need of support, and facilitate appointments, prescriptions, and diagnoses. The Five Year Forward View’s objective of exploiting the “information revolution” remains a priority. To this end, it will be key for the UK to collect, control and use its data smartly. Further still, this data can enable the UK to become a global leading health innovator and promote the pharmaceutical industry.

This roundtable discussed how the UK can become a global leading health innovator using data. It outlined the data environment that can best lead to practical improvements within healthcare, while protecting users’ data. Fostering health innovation will transform value for money within health-care, while strengthening the UK’s global position and serving as best practice internationally.

This event was a part of a series of Reform events supported by Accenture as part of the company’s digital initiative, identifying the key areas in which businesses, policy makers and public-sector organisations can drive changes that will allow the UK to continue to lead in the digital economy whilst ensuring an inclusive and responsible digital revolution. More information on the initiative can be found here.

This roundtable was held under Chatham House Rule and was held in partnership with Accenture:
