The future of eye care: building on NHS reform success

Reform is delighted to host a high-level roundtable with Dr David Geddes, Director of Primary Care Commissioning at NHS England exploring the theme ‘The future of eye care: building on NHS reform success’.

NHS eye care is a major success story which is sometimes overlooked in the wider health policy debate. In terms of volume, cataract surgery has grown to become the most common operation performed in the Service. More importantly, over the last 30 years, eye care has developed an excellent public/private partnership which has put eye health services on every high street. As such, it is a key case study for the rest of the NHS given the Service’s wish to develop care outside of hospitals.

At the same time, eye care is enjoying benefits from the same innovations that will apply to other areas of healthcare.  Advances in machine learning should allow faster reading of scans, enabling eye health professionals to make more accurate diagnoses of the commonest eye conditions. The partnership between Google DeepMind and Moorfields Eye Hospital is an important development.

The roundtable will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
